aka, That Fandom Which Shall Not Be Named...

aka LOTR RPS.

Man, it's been like being closeted. Especially since before I started reading it, I was always one to say, "RPS? Ew!" But then, one fateful day this spring, I said to myself, "Let's see what all the fuss is about."

And I liked it.

And I couldn't tell anyone about it. Because all of my friends? "RPS? Ew!"

But one day I was just dying to tell SOMEONE about this amazing story I'd just read, and I told my friend L. It was like coming out, it really was. And not only was she cool with it, she wanted to read it. I finally had someone I could discuss it with.

I've been trying to think of what about RPS appeals to me. I've been reading slash fiction for nearly five years now, and been rather a fannish dilletante--I'll devour a fandom, move on, keep up with it for a while, realize I haven't read it in months, see if there's new stories... I think what I like about RPS is the..lack of special powers, maybe? The other fandoms I read or have read, the characters are immortal, or have super senses, or are mutants, or have superpowers, and so on.

Hmmm. I'll continue to think on this.

Yup. That "Ew, RPS!" girl? That was me. I had just barely started reading *character* slash, let alone this creepy real person stuff. Fortunately, I had a friend who convinced me to read one. Her fault, all her fault. And it's *nice* to have RL friends to squee about this stuff with. Even though the people around us start giving us funny looks...
